CHAPTER 26

All week, Detective Rhonda Saintil had had an uneasy feeling that someone was watching her. Saintil and every other brunette in the area were taking extra precautions, never walking alone after dark, and some had even changed their hair color.

Saintil didn’t always have the luxury of waiting for someone to walk with, and taking a cab home every day wasn’t practical. She needed to get back by 5:35 every day, or there would be consequences. And now, as the sun set earlier every night, she would leave work in the dark soon.

She always carried her service revolver with her, but as added protection, she now carried a four-inch pocketknife. She wasn’t sure how the killer got so physically close to his victims with no apparent struggle, but if he was sneaking up on them, as was the theory, taking time to reach for a gun might mean her death while a knife in hand was a weapon ready to go.

Rhonda watched the clock as she finished her paperwork. It had been a rough week with the death of Adrianne Schechter. Heightened security tactics were instated, but she knew it wasn’t enough. The secure measures would only challenge the killer, make it more interesting for him.

She straightened her desk and left the daily paperwork on Hunter’s desk. He was at a weekly meeting of a joint task force established to capture the Stealth Stalker Killer and would find her reports when he got back. They were still waiting on forensic evidence from Adrianne Schechter’s Taser. One electrode had DNA on its barb.

He must’ve been too stunned by Adrianne’s attack to grab the Taser before he ran, she thought, somewhat amused by the pun. The potential DNA evidence was the first break they’d had.

Standing at Hunter’s desk, she peered through the window of the small office where he and the doctor worked. She studied the whiteboard with the map and photos of the victims taped to it. She wasn’t sure what to make of Dr. Cooper, who seemed nice enough, but there was no way she would get into a deep conversation, or any conversation, with a shrink. There was too much she didn’t want to reveal about herself. And wasn’t that what shrinks did? Get into your head to look around in all the dark corners?

No thanks. I’ve kept my secrets this long, and I don’t plan on blowing it now. She’d consciously decided to steer clear of Cameron Cooper ever since her arrival in September.

The longing looks between Cameron and Hunter, the secrets, the touches that lingered, hadn’t escaped her. They obviously had a thing for one another, but it was no concern of hers. What they did in their free time was their business just like her personal life was her business. As long as they could keep their professional and private worlds separate and it had no impact on her, she didn’t care what they did.

Rhonda grabbed her coat and backpack and headed for the door. The night air surprised her.
